Bristol Food & Drink: February

Parlour
Happy February – your diet ends here at The Parlour!

After a month off I’m back with a fresh list of exciting food & drink frolics to whet your appetite for February!

January was a bit of a quiet one, although I did do my first ickle interview on the telly (talking about the Bristol food scene on Made in Bristol TV), and I also found out that people prefer their bananas yellow rather than green or brownfollow me on Twitter for more insightful polls and questions.

Food Trails

Before I get too carried away with this month’s events, I recommend watching this video from Elly Pear on her favourite Bristol food spots – some proper treasures in there! There’s also a lush new video of the city from Visit Bristol which is well worth a watch.

And as a bonus & tribute to the man who made Eurovision palatable, here’s another Bristol food trail from the much-loved and recently-departed Terry Wogan.

Try something different!

Start the year by learning a new skill or sampling something you’ve not tried before – here are a few suggestions I’m eyeing up:

Valentine’s Day

If you’re into celebrating this festival of schmaltz, these are some of the best options to impress that special someone (or here’s a full list of the best places for a date night). Enjoy your romantic plans whilst I wait in line for chippy chips (which I won’t have to share, ha!)

Pop-ups & Supper Clubs

Bristol’s exciting pop-up and supper club scene shows no sign of slowing down in 2016; make sure you head to at least one of these if you want a proper treat (seriously – check out their menus)

Beery times

Whether you’re parched from Dry January or just up for a tipple or five, February features an impressive amount of  beer-soaked fun times…

  • Brandon Beer Festival (#BeeronBrandon) from Thu 4th to Sunday 7th (which also coincides with the 1st birthday of Hope & Anchor, so pop in to give them a hug!)
  • Tap takeovers this month include Brew by Numbers at Beer Emporium and Tiny Rebel at The Hare, woop!
  • Aviator in Redland will be celebrating the Six Nations by having some special beers on tap, as well as serving up big plates of ribs & screening all matches live
  • The King St pubcrawl is about to get that bit harder, with the imminent arrival of the Prince St Social, and King Street Brew House following not long after!
  • Spanish brewery Cerveza Domus will be bringing their beers (UK exclusive!) to the Moor Beer brewery on Sat 6th, which you can enjoy alongside Spanish food and live music, ole!

Newbies to try

If I have one request for this year, it’s for no new places to open until September so that I can catch up on all the ones I haven’t managed to try yet. Here are some of the latest places you need to shift your bum to:

  • Vegan junk food at VX Bristol, with Adam & Eve also relaunching as the UK’s first totally vegan pub
  • A relocation to central Bristol for Michelin-starred Casamia
  • Casual fine dining from Adelina Yard on Welsh Back and Bulrush in Cotham
  • Sate your sweet tooth at The Parlour on Cheltenham rd (see the pic at the top of this post; wow), or Swoon Gelato and Pinkmans bakery on Park St.
  • Fresh (-ish) faces on Gloucester rd include fish, chip & soul food joint Soul Fish, revamped pub Gloucester Road Ale House (which was The Forresters), Korean restaurant Kimchi Kim and the rustic Pizzarova.
  • I’ve also found my new favourite place in the form of German deli-café Speck Brothers in St James’s Arcade in Broadmead. Check out their lush meats & cheeses, as well as their daily homemade hot lunches, sandwiches and cakes – yum!
